Chavela Vargas, whose interpretations of Mexico’s classic ranchera songs made her a star in Latin America and Spain, died this week at 93.
After breaking through a male-dominated musical scene in 1930s, she shocked audiences further by wearing men’s clothes and being generally fearless.
On her sexuality, she leaves us with this: “I have nothing to be ashamed of.”
